Reiki

Reiki as defined by the Oxford English dictionary is:

“A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being”.

 

It is however, also widely accepted that Reiki can be given and received equally effectively hands-off or via distant healing. The Japanese word ‘Reiki’ literally translates as universal life force energy. This system of healing was developed by Mikao Usui the early 20th century. It is a non-invasive complementary therapy that has been taught and used in the UK since the late 1900s, but Eastern medicine has for thousands of years worked with this energy, recognising its flow through all living things. Reiki supports orthodox medicine or can be used alone but is not a replacement for traditional medication or treatments. It is not based on any belief, faith or suggestion, yet, scientific research using quantum physics is starting to help us to understand how Reiki may work to benefit the individual. It has been suggested that in years to come it may be known as energy medicine based on scientifically measurable energy emitted from the practitioner’s hands.

Who can receive Reiki?

Reiki energy naturally occurs in each and every one of us. It is a powerful yet gentle energy that is suitable to be used on everyone from pregnant ladies, babies to the frail and the elderly to bring comfort and peace.

What to expect during a Reiki treatment

You, the client will remain fully clothed and lay on the couch. I will talk initially to you to help you relax, through concentrating on your breathing and other meditative techneques. I then gently place my hands in a series of non-intrusive positions on or near the body. Reiki works to unblock any energy pathways which have become stuck as a result of tension, stress, illness or disease. This then allows your body to feel re balanced, allowing natural healing to take place.

What do Reiki treatments feel like?

Reiki healing is an individual process which takes it’s own time. All that is needed to begin with is willingness to participate in your own healing journey.

The energy can be felt as a warm, tingling, peaceful sensation or maybe just a sense of calm and tranquillity.

Some people describe Reiki as:

‘’a warm comforting feeling’’

‘’deep relaxation’’ 

‘helps bring my emotions out … brings me peace

‘feeling like you have slept several hours but not and being in our subconscious mind state’

How often do I need a treatment?

This all depends on the reason for treatment. You could initially come fortnightly, working up to monthly treatments.

A course of 3 or 4 treatments are recommended to see the full benefits.

How will I benefit?

Firstly we are all different and respond to Reiki like any treatment differently. If we allow the Reiki energy flow then a course of treatments could benefit us in a variety of ways and felt on different levels physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Benefits reported include deep relaxation, promoting a calm, peaceful sense of wellbeing on all levels. Creating greater inner harmony and balance, regular Reiki treatments promote a calmer response to life’s challenges.

Reiki’s gentle energy is easily adapted to most medical conditions and may be used safely by people of all ages, including pregnant mothers, the new-born, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, in any situation.

Note: Reiki is being used in various settings including private practice, complementary therapy centres, GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices, cancer support groups, post-operative recovery, drug rehabilitation, prisons, HIV/AIDS centres, and in the care of the elderly.
